What is Traineeships?

Traineeships were introduced in 2013, and it is a skill development programme that includes a work placement. The duration can last ranging from 6 weeks up to 1-year (although most will last for less than 6 months).  Traineeship helps 19-24 years old or 25 years old with an Education Health and Care (EHC) plan – get ready for apprenticeship or job if they don’t have the appropriate skills or experience.  

What will the course include and how they are funded?

Traineeships are free.  

We deliver our Traineeship programmes as a subcontractor to Strode College, funded by ESFA.  

From the training provider you get: 

  • Training to prepare you for work, including CV writing and what to expect in the workplace 
  • Support to improve your English, Maths and Digital skills if you need it 
  • Sector-focused vocational learning to help prepare you for your apprenticeship or job and recognition of your learning 

From the employer you get: 

  • A high-quality work placement of at least 70 hours 
  • An interview for an apprenticeship or job if available, or an exit interview with written feedback 
  • Programmes can be tailored to meet your needs and prepare you for what local businesses are looking for. 

If you are eligible, you can maintain your entitlement to benefits whilst on a Traineeship as necessary. 

Along with recognition of your learning, there will be support to link you with job opportunities.

Who can apply for a Traineeship?
  • Aged 19-24
  • Have little or no work experience
  • Be unemployed, or employed for fewer than 16 hours per week
  • Lacking in the skills/knowledge/confidence to secure an Apprenticeship
  • Want to work
  • Have been applying for Apprenticeships and have so far been unsuccessful
  • Have qualifications below Level 4
How long does a Traineeship take?

The average course will be 12 weeks/3 months. However, Traineeships can run from 6 weeks to 6 months dependant on individual applicants.

Where will I do my course?

You will have a work placement and undertake training at Presidency London College.

When and where do I apply?

You can apply for a Traineeship at any time. To start a Traineeship, contact our Employer Engagement team on 020 3784 6005, who will provide you with all the help and support and get you enrolled.

What are the benefits of a Traineeship?

A Traineeship will give you helpful exposure to the world of work and improves your skills, experience, and confidence. It will also provide you with an opportunity to achieve an English and/or Maths at GCSE ‘C’ or above a level four if you have not already achieved this. Gaining an English and/or Maths at GCSE ‘C’ or above a level four will help improve your opportunity for an Apprenticeship or to gain employment.

Future Prospects? What will it do for me?

When you leave your traineeship, you can expect to have improved your CV significantly with relevant work experience, have increased confidence and a strong idea of where you are going. If an apprenticeship is not available at the end of the traineeship, we will work with the trainee to give them meaningful feedback to help them secure an apprenticeship or employment in the future.

A traineeship is a course designed to prepare young people aged 19-24 for their future career. Traineeships are a stepping stone, with the aim for young people to develop themselves and progress to gaining an Apprenticeship, employment or go on to learning at a higher level.

94% of employers consider traineeships to be an effective way of increasing young people’s chances of finding paid jobs and apprenticeships.

How will it benefit my business?
  • The Government funds traineeships: you will not have to pay for your trainee’s course. On top of this, there are no requirements for you to pay your trainee for their work. It is a cost-effective way of recruiting new talent.
  • Flexible content to meet the needs of your businesses.
  • Most businesses have the ability to offer a traineeship. Almost any workplace could offer a traineeship and they are very flexible programmes, which means we can work with your business to design a traineeship, which suits your company’s needs.
  • Traineeships allow you to select the best apprenticeship candidates. Some of the traineeship students’ progress onto an apprenticeship programme, which means that traineeships can be an excellent way to recruit and train young people to work within your company with the specific skills and abilities that your business requires.
  • They have a positive impact on the next generation of workers. Pledging to offer a traineeship placement helps a young person to enter the workforce and teaches them the skills they need to become your ideal employee. Not only does this improve their chances for employment, but also it helps you grow your business in a positive way.
  • You can improve your employees’ mentoring skills. Traineeships are a great way to improve your current employees’ mentoring and management skills. Assigning a member of staff as a mentor for your trainee will help them develop their leadership skills, so you can give them experience that will help them manage staff members in the future.
Why offer a Traineeship placement?

Not all young people are prepared or certain they are ready for work. Traineeships provide a supported and informed environment to guide and move into apprenticeship, workplace, or further study/training.

What happens if I offer a placement?

We will need to visit the workplace to confirm placement, expectations of applicant and fill out a short Health and Safety form with a key member of staff.

Future Prospects
  • For businesses, traineeships are a way to source new talent and get to know the trainee before potentially offering them an apprenticeship or a job. They enable your business to create a pool of talent that could be used to source future employees of your company.
  • The traineeship ends with a mock-interview conducted at your business, plus feedback about their performance.
  • There is no obligation for your business to hire a trainee after the course has finished, however some of the businesses we work with decide to progress their successful trainees onto apprenticeships – where we can create bespoke training programmes to address your business’ skills needs.
